7 Things to Do Before Setting Up FamFi
The real value comes from preparing your family for what happens afterward—using money as an opportunity to build confidence instead of creating stress.

Start With a Conversation
Before downloading the app, spend a few minutes talking with your kids about why your family is using FamFi.
The goal isn't to monitor every purchase or make money stressful. It's to help everyone better understand where money is going and build stronger financial habits together.
Let them know they'll have their own version of the app on their own phone. They'll be able to see:
- ✓ Their account balances
- ✓ Monthly budgets
- ✓ Spending by category
- ✓ How much they have left to spend
- ✓ Where their money is going throughout the month
One of our favorite features is that kids don't have to guess whether they're staying on budget. They always know exactly where they stand.
Reward Good Budgeting
Many families choose to motivate good budgeting with a monthly reward.
If you've enabled a monthly budget reward, your child can see exactly what they're working toward. Throughout the month they'll know whether they're on track to earn it.
Instead of money becoming a surprise at the end of the month, it becomes a goal they can actively manage every day.
It's about making better decisions one month at a time."
Budgets Aren't Set in Stone
One of the most important things parents can tell their kids is this:
The first budget probably won't be perfect—and that's okay.
Budgeting is a learning process for everyone, including parents.
Maybe your teenager spends less on entertainment than expected but needs a little more for gas. Maybe your college student discovers groceries cost more than they planned.
That's normal.
FamFi makes it easy for the family administrator to adjust budget categories as your family learns what works best. Over time, budgets become more accurate and more personal.
Have Your Financial Accounts Ready
During setup, you'll connect the accounts you want FamFi to track.
Checking accounts, savings accounts, debit cards, and credit cards from virtually any major bank or retailer can be linked to provide a complete picture of spending.
Before starting setup, it's helpful to have:
- ✓ Online banking usernames and passwords
- ✓ Family member account information
- ✓ Debit and credit cards you want to monitor
Having this information ready makes setup much faster and helps ensure each family member starts with accurate financial data.
AI Gives You a Great Starting Point
One feature parents love is that FamFi doesn't ask you to build every budget from scratch.
During setup, FamFi's AI creates recommended starting budgets using:
- ✓ Your ZIP code's current cost of living
- ✓ Your selected lifestyle level (Bronze, Silver, or Gold)
- ✓ The age and stage of each family member
These recommendations provide a realistic starting point while still giving parents complete control.
Every budget category can be adjusted at any time, allowing each child's budget to reflect your family's priorities and spending habits.
