Why Most Finance Apps Miss the Mark

If you've ever searched for a finance app for your kids, you've probably noticed something.

Most apps are built for one very specific age.

Some look like they belong in elementary school, filled with cartoon graphics and games. Others are simply adult budgeting apps with tiny text, endless menus, and features that even many adults find overwhelming.

When we started looking ourselves, we couldn't find anything that really fit.

Our oldest child was becoming more independent while another was just beginning to learn about money. Before long we realized something obvious:

Kids don't all learn about money the same way—or at the same time.

A twelve-year-old getting their first debit card has very different needs than a high school senior with a part-time job. And neither looks anything like a college student learning to manage rent, groceries, subscriptions, and everyday expenses.

Yet most finance apps expect everyone to use exactly the same experience.

We wanted to build something different.

One App That Grows With Your Family

Instead of creating separate products for every age, we designed FamFi to adapt as your child grows.

During setup, parents can choose an experience designed for each family member's stage of life. The app automatically starts with layouts, budgets, categories, and guidance appropriate for that age—without requiring parents to configure dozens of settings.

Preteens

  • Simple spending categories
  • Easy budgets
  • Parent guidance
  • Learning where money goes

Teens

  • Personal budgets
  • Spending insights
  • Growing independence
  • Real-world money habits

College Students

  • Rent and groceries
  • Subscriptions
  • Income tracking
  • Smarter budgeting

Young Adults

  • Personal financial management
  • Long-term budgeting
  • Financial confidence
  • Independence with less stress

One Family. Multiple Experiences.

Every family member doesn't need the same interface.

Parents have an administrative view that helps them manage budgets, understand spending patterns, and guide financial conversations.

Kids, teens, college students, and young adults have their own personalized experience focused on understanding their money—not managing everyone else's.

That means everyone sees the information most relevant to them while staying connected through the same family account.

Why Presets Matter

One of the smartest decisions we made was building age-based presets.

Instead of expecting parents to spend an hour configuring categories, budgets, alerts, and spending views, FamFi starts with recommendations that make sense for that stage of life.

  • ✓ Budget suggestions
  • ✓ Spending categories
  • ✓ Savings goals
  • ✓ Insights
  • ✓ Parent visibility

Every family is different, so everything can still be customized. The presets simply give families a head start.

Simplicity Wasn't an Accident

We actually spent a surprising amount of time removing things.

Every unnecessary button.

Every confusing menu.

Every screen that required a manual.

Because if parents don't enjoy using the app, they won't open it.

And if kids feel overwhelmed, they'll stop using it.

"Money habits don't suddenly appear at 18.
They're built one decision at a time."

Built for Conversations, Not Just Tracking

At the end of the day, FamFi isn't really about budgets or transactions.

It's about creating better conversations.

When parents and kids can both see spending clearly—and everyone is looking at the same information—it becomes much easier to talk about goals, choices, savings, and the habits that lead to financial independence.

Our hope is that families eventually outgrow the need for parental oversight—not because they stop caring, but because healthy money habits have become second nature.

That's why we built FamFi to grow with your family instead of forcing your family to outgrow the app.
